動画: North Korean defector's family heartbreak
去年、ロンドンの北朝鮮大使館から韓国へ亡命して話題になった元駐英北朝鮮大使テ・ヨンホ氏。このブログでも以前取り上げました。現在は頻繁に各国のメディアに登場しており、そのひょうひょうとしたキャラクターもあってかすっかり"時の人"になっているようです。
さて、そのテ・ヨンホ氏が先日BBCのインタビュー(英語)で、祖国に残してきた家族のことなどを語りました。約2分半の動画です。
テ氏の英語は、うっすら韓国語訛りの残るイングランド風。ゆっくりはっきり発音するので、聴きやすいと思います。

T: I'm sure that my relatives' and my brother and sisters' families by now are all sent to either remote closed areas or prison camps, so that really breaks my heart.
おそらく私の親戚や兄弟姉妹の家族は今頃、辺境の、隔離された場所か、強制収容所に送られていると思います。本当に胸が張り裂ける思いです。
I: If you could imagine your brother shouting at you, "Why did you do this to me? Why have you put me in this place?", what would you say (to him)?

T: That is really a question which I do not like to even think about[*1]. But that's why I'm very much now determined to do everything possible to pull down (the) North Korean regime in order to save not only my family members but the whole North Korean people from slavery.

I: If . . . When Kim Jong-un gets the bomb properly and missiles to deliver (it), is he capable of pressing that button and destroying Los Angeles?
もし、いや、いつか金正恩氏が核弾頭と、それを搭載するミサイルを完成させたら、彼に核ボタンを押してロサンゼルスを破壊することはできますか？
Kim Jong-un knows quite well that (the) nuclear weapon is the only guarantee for his rule, and Kim Jong-un, I think, will press the button of this dangerous weapons[*4] when he thinks that his rule and his dynasty is threatened to be collapsed.
金正恩は、自分の政権を保証してくれるものが核兵器しかないことをよくわかっています。彼はおそらく、自分の政権や(世襲による)権力体制が崩壊の危機にさらされていると感じた時、核ボタンを押すと思います。
